Get Immunity at The Health Food Emporium!

Some of the questions that I get asked most often is:
What vitamins do you take? and Where do you buy them from?
Well, I have shopped around and done a lot of research on the best of the best vitamins. A few months ago I wrote about New Chapter, which is one of the companies I buy several products from. One of my favorite products is Immunity Take Care. Where do I buy it? Health Food Emporium.

Health Food Emporium is a great find! A big thank-you to my friend who told me about this store. I have not found Immunity Take Care at a lower price.

What is it?
It's elderberry, which Hippocrates described Elderberry's (Sambucus nigra) use in tonics because it was traditionally used to help support the immune system.

They are chewable yummy purple pills that help your immune system, especially during flu and cold season. They are something that will always be on my shelf or in my suitcase:)
Immunity Take Care herbal extract is fingerprinted and guaranteed to have the same potency from dose-to-dose. There are many other elderberry supplements on the market but this is the highest quality, in my opinion.

Health Food Emporium sells all of my favorite products and at the best prices around! The owners are New Chapter and Garden of Life fans. And after browsing through their book section, I see that we favor the same authors, such as Jordin Rubin and Dr. Russell Blaylock.

I feel like I know owner
Gail Bowman, after reading her comical book Country Tales. I was sent this book to review and read it a few days ago under a shady palm tree near my house. It is a quick read and very humorous. The story starts with Gail and her family making the move from city to country life. It is a winding tale of a family and their daily life raising goats, rabbits, and cows. They have outrageous neighbors, meet some hilarious people, and love every minute sharing in the funny moments together!
I enjoyed reading her tales and laughed out loud more than once - thanks Gail.

A Eco-Friendly Detergent Review

Vaska’s herbatergent ™ uses real herbs and potent botanical cleaning agents for high performance stain removal and extreme freshness. Clothing stays brighter, lasts longer and feels softer without the chemical residues that cause skin irritation and fabric damage. Vaska’s herbatergent ™ is gray water and septic tank safe. Recommended for babies and people with sensitive skin. Herbatergent ™ is safe for use on all natural and synthetic washable fabrics.

INGREDIENTS: Plant based surfactants, vegetable conditioner, water-soluble degreasing agent, lavender extract, lavender scent and filtered water.

I had the chance to try Vaska's new Herbatergent. I used Vaska Herbatergent and liked how it thoroughly cleaned my clothes. The scent free laundry detergent was not my favorite because there is a slight chemical smell. Although, when the clothes are out of the dryer they smelt clean. I prefer their lavender scented detergent.

It is great to find companies like Vaska who care about your health and the environment to make a more natural alternative to harsh detergents. They also sell oxygenbleach and spotoff.

Aloha Friday ~ Cooking Tip

ALOHA FRIDAY everyone!!! It's that time again here on Mom's Best Bets where we share our healthy ideas for the weekend!
We love to eat fresh Salmon. Here are some cooking tips as well as a nutritional breakdown of this incredible swimmer.
How to prepare it:
Grilled, sautéed, steamed, sashimi...the list goes on. I prefer salmon steamed. Here is a quick and easy tip when steaming fish to make clean up a snap! Place a lettuce leaf under the fish when steaming. The skin will stick to the lettuce instead of the pan. Don't worry, the fish still cooks perfectly.

Why it's good for you:
It is low in calories and saturated fat, yet high in protein. It is also full of omega-3 essential fatty acids. Wild-caught cold water fish, like salmon, are higher in omega-3 fatty acids than warm water fish. The omegas in salmon have been known to help to reduce the risk of inflammation and help circulation. In addition to being an excellent source of omega-3s, salmon also contains vitamins and minerals such as, niacin, vitamin B12, phosphorus, magnesium and vitamin B6.

We would love to hear from you and what healthy ideas, tips, or plans you have, so please share below :)

Dr. Weil's Baby Bottle Line Review

I am a fan of Dr. Andrew Weil. I have read Dr. Andrew Weil's Guide to Optimum Health and subscribe to his newsletter. He always has great tips and new healthy information to share, After reading more, I have learned a lot about the powerful medicinal properties of mushrooms for the body and especially for skin. I didn't know that Dr. Weil made bottles and sippy cups! With all the hype over the BPA controversy, it's comforting to know there are safe alternatives. His line is not just safe but is a sleek modern design, made of Tritan and Glass. Tritan is a plastic made from copolyester. It is BPA-free, Recycle Resin #7, impact and shatter resistant, dishwasher safe, and able to be sterilized. Don't be confused with some plastics that are also labeled # 7 which are polycarbonates and do contain BPA. They also claim that tritan does not retain flavors from previous beverages, ensuring a fresh expected taste experience.

All of the parts are engineered, tested, and manufactured in the USA to ensure they meet the strictest quality control standards.

The metro-looking bottles have a AirWave vent system effectively works to reduce colic and a soft nipple. All of the products and packaging are recyclable to reduce the carbon footprint.

For all of the expecting moms, and/or moms with babies looking for BPA free bottles, BPA free sippy cups or you want more information on a line free of toxins, check out http://weilbaby.com.

Mom's Best Bets' Stocking Stuffers!

Here are some great stocking stuffer ideas for the nut and lotion fans in your life!

Nuts are a popular stocking stuffer for dads, moms, uncles, and pretty much anyone who is nuts about nuts! If you are looking for something unique, tastes great, and is all natural, try Sahale Snacks....ever heard of them? I have been seeing them in stores everywhere. These Epicurean flavored glazed nuts will be sure to satisfy. I was able to sample two varieties, which my husband liked a lot. For the cashew lover, the Glazed Nuts Cashews are mixed with pomegranate and pure vanilla bean. They kind of taste like Christmas. They have a slight sweet taste but are more salty. The Nut Blend Soledad is a blend of almonds, apple, flax seeds, dates, balsamic vinegar, and red pepper. I recommend these sprinkled on a salad! There are many more combinations of Sahale Snacks. Sahale Snacks can be found in many stores nationwide or online through Amazon.com.

This lotion called Skin MD is lightweight, very moisturizing, and has a light non offensive scent that could be worn by male or female. Skin MD sent me this lotion to review. The packaging is plain but the relief from dry skin is real. There is basically no smell at all and the ingredients are listed and described on the website. The before and after photos of severe dry skin and smooth skin were convincing. If you would like to try some for yourself or as a stocking stuffer for that person that wants a good moisturizer without the chemicals or smell, check Skin MD out. (Retail Value $25)

Giveaway: $15.00 to PIGGY PAINT!!!

Piggy Paint...brilliant!

Every little girl wants to paint her toes with mommy's nail polish. My daughter loves too but now she has her very own with "Piggy Paint!" Piggy Paint is water-based polish made of natural ingredients. This kid-friendly hypoallergenic polish is formaldehyde, toluene, phthalates, biphenyl A, ethyl acetate and acetone free! It is also made in the USA!

My daughter's favorite part is the precious pink piggy on the label. My favorite part is that there is almost no odor or toxic chemicals. Piggy Paint stays on well and dries hard. I have to confess that I liked the color so much, I painted my nails with Piggy Paint.

Tori Spelling is a fan of piggy paint too! "Piggy Paint made its Hollywood debut on Saturday, June 6, 2009, at Stella McDermott’s first birthday party."

Their nail polish remover is orderless, safe, and takes off polish better than I imagined. I did a test using a generic non-acetone brand versus Piggy Paint remover. The Piggy Paint was by far superior. Mom's Best Bets also likes that this company ships their products in recycled peanuts.

The best part is "Mom's Best Bets" readers will receive 15% off anything on their site, including sales items. Spend over $25 and domestic shipping is FREE!

The coupon code is: BEST15L expiration December 15

Kidorable Umbrella Giveaway!!!!

Have you heard of Kidorable? They are best known for their bright and fabulous umbrellas! They also sell matching rainboots, raincoats, beach towels, backpacks, and more.   I first heard about Kidorable when I saw their beautiful umbrellas on the cover of People magazine below.  Then, a few of my friends had various products bought from Kidorable. I thought, hmmm...this is a pretty popular company with kids!  Let's face it, kids love the rain and having bright colored "cute as a button" umbrellas and rain gear is going to be sought after.
Above are pictures of my daughter in their Lotus Beach towel that I was sent to review, another great product!  It is very soft, fluffy, and has a little snap in the front for it to stay on.

Crayon Rocks...Rock!

ALOHA FRIDAY everyone!!! It's that time again here on Mom's Best Bets where we share our healthy ideas for the weekend!

My healthy tips is coloring...with Crayon Rocks.  My daughter and I had a grand time coloring today with these little gems.  Crayon Rocks are eco-friendly crayons that are in the shape of stones.  They are perfect for young children who are developing their fine motor skills.  Traditional crayons are made with paraffin wax  that is made out of kerosene-yuck!

You can feel safe using Crayon Rocks because they are made in the USA using natural soy wax and all natural mineral pigments.   Their unique rock shape is very appealing but make sure the child using them is not too young, because choking could be a concern due to their size and shape.

The colors are brilliant and they work beautifully.  I also like that they come in a little drawstring bag that makes it look like a treasure is inside.  I wish I had these when my daughter was younger because she spent so much time peeling off the paper on regular crayons.
**Colors include: red, pink, blue, sky, green, grass, dark yellow, light yellow, orange, peach, purple, light purple, brown, tan, black, gray
Please share your healthy thoughts, comments, or ideas!

Beaba Babycook Review

Receive $15.00 off your babycook today

Sweet potatoes I peeled and cubed.

Then switch the dial to steam.

Pull out and pour the sweet potatoes into the bowl when finished steaming (about 15 minutes)

Turn dial to puree

Fresh Sweet Potato baby food

What is Babycook?

The Beaba Babycook™ (BPA-Free) Babyfood Maker is a one-of-a-kind, compact appliance that steams, purees, defrosts and re-heats the freshest, healthiest food for your baby. It enables parents to provide the best ingredients for their baby's food at a fraction of the cost of jarred foods! Not only does preparing baby's food save families money, it also drastically cuts down on packaging and waste.Vegetables, fruits and meats steam in less than 15 minutes and retain their vitamins and flavors. After blending them to the desired consistency, parents can freeze extra portions and later use their Babycook to quickly defrost and reheat previously prepared food.

Features:

My impressions:
Many moms buy their baby food because they are too busy to think about the hassle of preparing food. Making your own baby food doesn't have to be a labor of love any more...it can just be plain old love! Fresh is definitely better and organic better yet. With an appliance like the babycook, you can easily prepare a bunch of servings in minutes. They can be poured into ice-cube trays and frozen for later use. There is only one small bowl and a lid to wash. It also has an automatic shut off so you don't need to monitor it like you would items boiling on a stove.

It retails for $149.00. At first I thought of this as being a luxury item and not a necessity, but then I did some math. Your baby will probably be eating baby food for about 12 months and roughly 3 jars a day. That comes out to be around 1,000 jars of baby food a year. If you are buying organic jars, then they are about $1.00. So you will probably spend around $1,000 on baby food for the year. Buying whole foods for the family and using the babycook to cook your little one's food might be a more economical and a healthier choice.  There is a great recipe book that come with it for older babies that can eat combinations of foods.

I am not surprised why celebrities such as Tori Spelling are using Beaba Babycook to prepare their little one's food. It is very compact, stylish, and lightweight. It is also a breeze to use and clean.
This is a Mom's Best Bet for baby food and will also make a fabulous gift!

Personalized Children's Book~A Great Gift!

Would your child or a child dear to you like to star in their very own book?
Imagine the excitement your child will have at seeing their name in a REAL BOOK. Now imagine them seeing their PICTURE in a real book!
MJM's books can give your child this experience. Each adventure gives you the option to change the APPEARANCE of the main character to look more like your own child. You can choose options such as Hair Color, Eye Color, and Skin Tone to make a personalized book you and your child will love to read together.
Some titles include What Animal Are You? and A Day At The Park. They are all original stories and artwork, have high quality printing, and are committed to protecting the
Environment.
I received A Day In The Park, starring my daughter. I was able to write a special message inside and she was able to see her name on the pages. This book is about a child (your child) who has an adventure at the park. She imagines the slide to be a great big dinosaur, blasts off into outer space and flies like an eagle. We had fun reading this book and my daughter was amazed that the story was about her.
I think that one of MJM's books would make a great Christmas present for the little readers in your life!

Crayon Cookie Craft

Children love crayons. New crayons are so appealing when standing tall and bright like soldiers ready to draw. If you walk into any preschool or look at a child's crayon supply they are probably a mixture of broken pieces (with wrappers off-kids love to peel them). If you have a lot of "old" crayons, I have a wonderful idea from "Beach Vintage" on how to recycle them into something new and fabulous!! They will also become more usable for younger kids because they will be able to pick up the crayons more easily.

Note: Please do not eat, for drawing only!
DIRECTIONS:
  1. Grab some old pieces of crayons
  2. Break them up into small pieces and color code them how you like in a non stick silicone/rubber mini cake tray.

  3. Heat oven to 150-200 degrees.

  4. Place tray inside and monitor. You want the crayons to melt but not become too runny or too hot (they will smoke). This usually takes about 5-6 minutes.
Take out tray and allow your tray to cool completely (note: don't move the pan because it will not dry with a smooth bottom-and be careful it is HOT)

  5. Pop out your little crayon cakes and start drawing.
For gifts, wrap them with ribbon. This is a wonderful and quick idea.

My daughter had so much fun drawing with these and I hope you have making something old into something fabulous!

The Pros of Probiotics

What are Probiotics?

Probiotics are live microbial organisms that are naturally present in our digestive tract. Probiotics are the good or "friendly" bacteria. We have both good and bad bacteria in our bodies. The key is keeping a balance so that the bad bacteria does not outweigh the good. The good bacteria helps with digestion. Probiotics can be found in food and supplements. Yogurt contains naturally occurring good bacteria. The shelves in your grocery store are usually filled with various types of yogurt from Activa and Dannon to Stonyfield.

Which one to choose?

Look for "live active cultures." I prefer a cultured dairy drink that is called kefir. If you don't consume dairy products it is also found in fermented foods such as sauerkraut, kim chee, and my husband's favorite, natto. You can also take supplements. I have also recently tried Attune chocolate bars. They are low in sugar and calories and high in calcium and probiotics. They are sold in many grocery stores and are a convenient way of getting more of the good stuff in your body!

Do you need it?

If you are having any digestive issues or are taking antibiotics, it might be a good idea to discuss taking a probiotic supplement with your doctor. Whether you add some yogurt, kim chee, Attune bars, or supplements to your diet, you are probably giving your digestive system a boost, while making you feel a lot better.

Tryptophan and Forgetfulness...

Oops..I almost forgot today was Aloha Friday...my day to post about what healthy activities we are all doing. Speaking of forgetting, I also forgot the cranberry sauce on Thanksgiving! It must be all of that tryptophan from the turkey!
My healthy activity is reflecting on all of the beauty, splendor, and loved ones that God has surrounded me with. I am very thankful!
Please share your ideas below and be featured next week!
